Objectives:

Children will be able to define the term area.

Children will be able to calculate area.

Children will be able to use manipulatives (square tiles) to demonstrate their knowledge of area.

Rationale:

Meeting these objectives are important in order to meet the curriculum requirements set forth by Altoona Central Catholic Middle School. I am teaching the lesson in this way because this is the format that is to be used at my participating school.

Materials:

Teacher:

Students:

Transition/Motivation:

I will gain their attention by asking them to tell me what they can tell me about perimeter and then area. I will write their answers on the board or have student record the responses. To motivate the students initially I will simply show my own enthusiasm for the subject and make them want to participate. If that is not effective then I may start out my lesson with a word problem for them to solve.

Organizer:

Students will know what to expect from this lesson because it is in the same format of the other lessons and the purpose will be introduced.

Lesson Sequence:

1. Ask class to think of the different ways area could be important or used.

2. Give the actual definition of the area.

§ Area is the number of squares of a certain size that will cover the shape.

3. Pair the students so that they can work together.

4. Ask each group to create a shape using the tiles that has a perimeter of 16. (Ex: Width-5, Length-3)

5. Then ask the students to fill in remaining spaces in shape with tiles.

6. Ask the students what the area of their shape is.

7. Ask the groups if they think all the shapes will have the same area.

8. Why do some shapes have more area but the same perimeter?

9. If they do not come up show 1cm x 18cm shape and 7cm x 3cm shape.

10. Go over practice problems (a-d pg.73).

11. Ask students to create a word problem that would result in an area of 20sq. ft.

12. Do a couple homework problems that could cause problems. (4,8,21,25,)

13. Ask the children if they have any questions.

14. Have them start on the homework for the lesson (problem set 31pg 74-75 #'s 1-25)

Ending the Lesson:

The activity will end when the children are finished with their homework or when the class period ends. If everyone is finished we will continue to read The Iceberg Hermit.

Transition to the next Lesson

The next lesson will be lesson 32 in the textbook. In order to prepare the students should have completed their homework and read for the chapter.

Pupil Evaluation:

I will know if the students reach the objectives if their homework is about 85% correct and they are able to tell me the definition when called on.
