In response to reviewing the tape there are a few things that are apparent in the children's understanding of fingerprints.
The first concept that the children seemed to have an understanding of is that fingerprints can be left on objects. One student in particular kept asking whether or not a fingerprint would show on a variety of materials ranging from cloth to rocks. They knew that it would appear on glass and tried to extend that knowledge. This knowledge was for the most part a consensus but a few students were skeptical. Many students believed that fingerprints would only show up on things that you could see through but others felt that a flat surface was all that was required.
Another concept that the children understood is that fingerprints are unique to the individual. They were aware that each person had a different fingerprint but they were unsure if the print was permanent.
